Debates, Debates, Debates

Bridget at FRNCA

Since the first encounter at Bay View Pines (see 9/11/11 post), there have been five debates for Town Board candidates, at North Sea, Speonk-Remsenburg, Noyac, Flanders-Riverside-Northampton, and last night with the League of Women Voters event in Southampton.  Highlights:  Bill Hughes calling the Flanders Farmers’ Market government-subsidized unfair competition with a private business when there’s no town subsidy and no business selling fresh produce in Flanders; Brad Bender answering an inflammatory question with Lincoln’s words that those who would deny freedom to others don’t deserve it themselves; and Bridget Fleming sharing the joy of seeing shore birds at Circle Beach and wanting that experience for all in Southampton through open beach access.  Last night, Bridget told the audience that when she came to Town Hall as a Councilwoman,  she found the cronyism and waste to be even more than expected, and reported on progress so far in reducing it.

The last debate will be on Monday, October 17, at 7:00 PM, held by the Hampton Bays Civic Association at the Senior Center, Ponquogue Ave. & Good Ground Rd. in Hampton Bays.  Come one, come all!

Good Times At Oakland’s

Bridget with Joe & PeteBridget, Jay & FriendsThe team

It was a typical early Fall evening, looking out from Oakland’s Restaurant at the sun going down over Shinnecock Bay and the boats rocking gently in their slips.  It doesn’t get any better, and the October 5th party for Bridget Fleming’s re-election campaign was worthy of the setting.  Figures from government, business, labor and civic groups came out, along with Bridget’s host of friends, to show their support.  The kitchen came up with killer hors d’oeuvres and an abundant buffet, the drinks flowed, and the music of Certain Moves lent a warm dimension to the affair.  Bridget greeted her guests, thanked the volunteers who had put so much work into the evening, and explained why it’s so important to elect her and her running mates, Anna Throne-Holst and Brad Bender, to put three members on the Town Board who will serve the people’s interest, not the special interests.

PBA Supports Bridget

The Southampton Patrolman’s Benevolent Association has endorsed Bridget Fleming for re-election to the Town Board.  In a letter addressed to her, PBA President Tim O’Flaherty reported that the organization’s board had voted their support unanimously and said:

The board was impressed with your knowledge of the financial situation facing not only Southampton Town residents but the business owners as well and your consistent support of working families. Your history with the District Attorney’s office shows that Law Enforcement is your passion and we are positive that you will be able to help the residents to receive the most out of their dollars when it comes to Public Safety.

It is my honor to present you with our endorsement and I hope each resident of the Town of Southampton recognizes the hard work and commitment that you do and we look forward to working with you more in the future.

LI Environmental Voters Forum Backs Bridget Fleming

Bridget Fleming’s campaign for re-election to the Southampton Town Board has received the endorsement of the Long Island Environmental Voters Forum, a non-partisan grassroots organization that recruits and actively campaigns for pro-environment candidates across Long Island.  The Forum’s Chairman made the following statement:

Bridget Fleming is among the top three Town Council persons in all 13 Long Island Towns.  Her commitment to the environment and to the people of Southampton is unparalleled.

In addition to viewing environmental stewardship as a quality-of-life issue, Ms. Fleming understands that Southampton Town’s natural attractions are vital to the health of its recreational economy, so that jobs and business depend directly on maintaining our special environment.

It’s always a good time at the Southampton Town Anti-Bias Task Force Picnic at Red Creek Park.  This is a real community event, put on by a group that works very hard at community outreach and making everyone feel a part of Southampton.  Bridget joined in for the games, the food and the good feelings that this gathering brings.  She’s pictured here with a few of the many kids who attended, Sgt. Todd Bennett of the Town Police and her running mates, Anna Throne-Holst and Brad Bender.

Youth + Green + Housing = Jobs

Keeping her promise to promote jobs in Southampton, Bridget Fleming brought together the Town’s Housing Authority and YouthBuild Long Island in a joint project to renovate a Town-owned affordable housing unit in Riverside.  YouthBuild serves young people in low-income communities with job training and career development, emphasizing Green industries such as renewables and Energy Star construction.  As liaison to both the Housing Authority and the Riverside area, Bridget said “we are very excited about this project, not just for what it will add to the community of Riverside, but also for the opportunity to work with YouthBuild Long Island to create jobs.”  She hailed it as “another example of neighbor helping neighbor to solve longstanding challenges in the community.”

Bay View Pines Meets The Candidates

Bridget answers a question.

A sure sign of the campaign season, the first local candidates’ forum was held on Friday, September 9 by the Bay View Pines Civic Association.  As the Town Board’s liaison to this area, Bridget has a special link to the community, and spoke of her efforts in starting the Flanders Farmers Market, spearheading the Local Waterfront Revitalization Project, getting an Animal Control Officer to handle complaints, and streamlining code enforcement.   In fact, all the members of the unified team – Bridget Fleming, Anna Throne-Holst and Brad Bender – demonstrated an impressive command of this community’s issues and concerns.
