Waterfront Protection Program Reaches Out

The Waterfront Protection Program spearheaded by Bridget Fleming is a comprehensive approach to managing the Town’s varied waterfront and the coastal economy that utilizes it.  To achieve Southampton’s objectives, the Program contemplates a broad-based land and water use plan.  This will not be a top-down process; instead, the Town is reaching out to residents to solicit their input on public access, water quality, flooding and erosion, commercial and recreational use, and a variety of other topics.  Public meetings were recently held in Hampton Bays and Bridgehampton:

Bridget Fleming Comments on North Sea Lawsuit

Town Councilwoman Bridget Fleming, who is running for re-election, offered the following comments in response to inquiries regarding her position on the matter of the Southampton Day Camp.

A defamation suit for $65 million has been filed by the developer of a proposed day camp at Little Fresh Pond in North Sea against two community leaders who opposed the project, claiming that literature distributed by the Little Fresh Pond Association contains material regarding his plan that is inaccurate, defamatory and malicious.  The 1.73-acre parcel on Major’s Path was formerly a tennis club and is now slated to become a day camp. Community objections include issues of traffic, noise and sewage disposal.  Councilwoman Fleming stated:

Although anyone who speaks publicly has the responsibility to be truthful, lawsuits that limit free speech are not appropriate.  It is particularly important when community members have concerns about environmental impacts that they should not be afraid to speak out.  I am hopeful that some of the emotion will be ratcheted down and that the lawsuit will not be pursued, but that the application will be considered by the appropriate boards, on the merits, with free and open comment by all stakeholders.

Governor Cuomo Endorses Bridget’s Team

Southampton’s Unified Team of Anna Throne-Holst, Bridget Fleming and Brad Bender has received the endorsement of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo.  The theme of “people, not politics” clearly resonates in Albany as much as it does here on the East End.  Bridget is especially gratified to have the backing of Andrew Cuomo, a leader who shares her concern with promoting jobs and the economy, preserving our environment, and keeping a tight rein on taxes and spending.

Communications Workers Back Bridget

Bridget Fleming has received the endorsement of the Communications Workers of America Local 1108 in her run for a full term on the Southampton Town Board.  In a letter, the organization stated:

We feel that you have been a strong advocate for the membership of CWA 1108 and the working men and women in the Town of Southampton.  It is greatly appreciated all that you have done for our membership, such as CWA’s Double Pole Bill.  You are a true friend of Labor and your loyalty to us all will not be forgotten.

The Double Pole bill refers to a law Bridget sponsored requiring utilities to remove dangerous and unsightly poles, thus promoting safety and keeping jobs in Southampton.

Bridget Rocks Final Debate

The 2011 Southampton debate season ended in a stark contrast last night at Hampton Bays, with a strong performance from Bridget Fleming.  Twice both Republican Town Board candidates admitted not reading crucial documents or not viewing tapes of important meetings when both are readily available.  Twice Bridget Fleming, who had the answers, replied that this is not acceptable performance for anyone who seeks public office.

In strong and unequivocal terms, Bridget turned the advice of one of her opponents to “compare and contrast” back on him and his colleague.  She showed that their lack of preparation compares most unfavorably with her own deep involvement and knowledge, and that of her running mate, Brad Bender, who though not a Board member, has attended almost every Town Board meeting for the last eighteen months, and serves on two appointed boards as well.

Besides these two obvious instances, Bridget displayed throughout the evening a level of commitment and familiarity with Town affairs and Hampton Bays issues that her opponents could not hope to match.  If it were not such a sad commentary on the state of politics in Southampton, it would be comical.  That’s how it’s been in all seven debates that have been held, because that’s how it is.

Most of the debates were televised, and will be re-aired over the next few weeks.

Bridget Chosen By Eleanor’s Legacy

The Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee, a group encouraging the participation of women in political life, has endorsed Bridget Fleming for re-election to the Southampton Town Board.  Founded in 2001 by former East Hampton and New York State Democratic Chair Judith Hope, Eleanor’s Legacy is designed to build a new generation of women candidates, informed voters and activists in New York State.  The organization said:

Bridget Fleming is a talented young lawyer who tracked down Medicaid fraud in Bob Morgenthau’s Manhattan DA’s office before relocating and working hard for the Sag Harbor community, including dealing with difficult immigration issues. Initially elected to the Southampton Town Council in a Special Election in 2010, Bridget is now running for a full 4-year term this November against well-funded opposition. She has impressed East Enders with her deeply felt commitment to the Town’s less-fortunate residents, as well as innovative projects to create local jobs and her dedication to preserving the clean environment and rural character of the area. Bridget has also been a lone voice in support of Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst’s financial reforms, reforms that played a large part in restoring the town’s credit rating. Bridget has a very promising future in New York politics and it is critical that she succeeds in this election year.

East End Transport Authority Proposed

Bridget w/Steve & friendsBridget w/Fred & friendsBridget w/team

Babylon Town Supervisor and Democratic Suffolk County Executive Candidate Steve Bellone today announced his support for creating a Peconic Bay Regional Transportation Authority during a press conference at the Southampton LIRR station.  Bellone noted that by separating from the MTA and creating its own authority, Eastern Long Island can address regional needs to create jobs, alleviate traffic and use transportation dollars for local needs rather than sending them to New York City.  Assemblyman Fred Thiele and Southampton Town Councilwoman Bridget Fleming also attended the event, along with Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst and Council candidate Brad Bender.

Bellone said that improved transportation is vital to the East End’s economy, which is why he will make this initiative one of his top priorities in his work with Suffolk County’s state delegation.
