The 2011 Southampton debate season ended in a stark contrast last night at Hampton Bays, with a strong performance from Bridget Fleming. Twice both Republican Town Board candidates admitted not reading crucial documents or not viewing tapes of important meetings when both are readily available. Twice Bridget Fleming, who had the answers, replied that this is not acceptable performance for anyone who seeks public office.
In strong and unequivocal terms, Bridget turned the advice of one of her opponents to “compare and contrast” back on him and his colleague. She showed that their lack of preparation compares most unfavorably with her own deep involvement and knowledge, and that of her running mate, Brad Bender, who though not a Board member, has attended almost every Town Board meeting for the last eighteen months, and serves on two appointed boards as well.
Besides these two obvious instances, Bridget displayed throughout the evening a level of commitment and familiarity with Town affairs and Hampton Bays issues that her opponents could not hope to match. If it were not such a sad commentary on the state of politics in Southampton, it would be comical. That’s how it’s been in all seven debates that have been held, because that’s how it is.
Most of the debates were televised, and will be re-aired over the next few weeks.
